About Peak Performance at Denim Works: Patagonia was founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1972; Chouinard originally started as an avid climber who began making his own technical equipment. After great success in this field; in 1972 they began making clothing as well. They wanted to maintain Chouinard Equipment as purely selling hardware for climbing, so they decided to call their new business venture Patagonia.

The company began very small taking what they knew about outdoor pursuits and applying it to the clothing they produced. Finding materials that were breathable, waterproof and lightweight to ensure their clothing were up to the demands of a variety of outside activities. Patagonia is also very sensitive to environmental issues, so much so that they co-founded the Alliance 1% For The Planet. Each year Patagonia donates 1% of their total sales or 10% of their profit (whichever is greatest) to environmental groups. Today Patagonia has donated more than $25 million to over 1,000 organizations.
